There are four systems of higher education in the State of California; the community college system; indedpendent college system; the California State University system and the University of California system.

Community colleges are regionally located throughout the State, have minimal academic entry retuirements, charge minimum fees/tuition, and focuses upon two year academic programs oriented towards vocational certification and preparation for transer to a four year college/university.  After successful completion of a two year academic program you will have obtained an A.A.; an associate of arts degree.

The California State University system has 24 sites across the State, has more demanding academic entry requirements, is more expensive to attend, and focuses upon four year college degrees; these degrees are also known as bachelor's degrees.

The University of California system has 10 sites across the State, has very demanding academic entry requirements, can be expensive to attend, provides four year degrees, and focuses upon advanced education beyond the four year degree.  Many students transfer from a 4-year California State University system to a University of California system to obtain their master's degree or Ph.D. (doctarate degree).

There are over 60 independent colleges in the State.  Academic requirements and tuition fees tend to be high and course work ranges from short-term to advanced degrees.  Many of these independent colleges are specialized schools which target a specific trade; such as diesel mechanics.
